The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) Exploration Center is a new, two-story, 10,000 square foot visitor center in Santa Cruz under development by a cooperative agreement between the City of Santa Cruz and NOAA. The building is nearing the end of the design phase by THA Architecture of Portland, Oregon. The building seeks to incorporate a variety of sustainable and resource-conserving features including a rainwater collection system. The City is looking for an advanced undergraduate or graduate student in civil and/or environmental engineering for the following project:
Internship Description
Extend the design and engineering completed to date by the project design team on a rainwater collection system for the building. Explore tank construction types, locations, and capacities. Validate collection points and distribution system. Analyze anticipated collection volume and utility savings. Coordinate with landscape architect as required. Develop descriptive language of the system for use in an interpretive setting within the Exploration Center.
