Today we had Sol Lipman, founder and CEO of 12seconds.tv come in and speak to our group. He is really able to relate to our students not just because he is interested in starting something and making a difference, but also because he is a UCSC alumni. He described why he started his company 12seconds.tv. He did it because he saw a need. He was not satisfied with the current means of quick communication so he set out to create a site that would let people communicate effectively.
In the course of the conversation it became apparent that it is not always possible to work for yourself and start something without paying the bills. After all, when our students graduate they will be on their own and expected to provide for themselves. Sol’s advice to them is that they can have a job to pay the bills but also be an entrepreneur on the side.
Then Sol introduced our group to his new project and asked our students to give him their email if they were interested in getting involved. Needless to say, Sol got a lot of new emails that morning.
